Gaios is the main village on the island
and it is where most of the shops and services are located. The post
office, the electricity offices, the telephone (OTE) office, the council
buildings, and the tax office are all here in Gaios.
It is also the centre for
communications, especially in the winter, as the harbour is where the
hydrofoil and ferries arrive and leave from. It is also the place the
sea plane lands, whilst the sea taxis leave from the square.
Gaios has a very pretty little square
which is quite unusual in that one side of the square is actually the
sea!
FACILITIES:
1. Supermarkets:
There are many supermarkets in the village which stock a good range of
food and other everyday items.
2. Other shops:
There is a wide variety of clothes, DIY, gardening etc shops and Gaios
is the main shopping centre on the island. Other shopping is done on
Corfu or the mainland.
3. Tavernas:
There is a vast range of tavernas and fast-food places in Gaios located
in the square, around the town and along the front.
4. Bars & Kafenios:
Around the square and along the front are a number of bars and kafenios.
5. Exchange:
There is a bank and a couple of ATMs in Gaios. Most shops and tavernas
now take credit card payments.
6. Churches:
There is an Orthodox church in the square and a number of others around
the rest of the village.
7. Sports:
Boat hire and the usual watersports are on offer but there is also a
good football pitch on the road to Magazia where the local Paxos team
plays every other Sunday in the winter.
8. Beaches:
The main area for swimming for people from Gaios is Anti Paxos with its
wonderful sandy beaches, but there is a town beach and, if you hire a
boat, you can get to a number of other beaches in the area.
9. Transport:
If you don’t have your own car, you can hire one so that you are free to
get around as you please. Otherwise you may think about hiring a boat or
a scooter. Public transport is provided by the air conditioned coach
which runs around the island several times a day linking the main
villages of Gaios, Lakka and Loggos. There are also a number of taxis
available and the taxi drivers are happy to give guided tours. But the
best way to see the island is on foot.
